Smart Telecom Receives Approval to Launch 4G Services in Nepal

Key Takeaways

  • Smart Telecom, Nepal's third-largest mobile operator, has received official approval to launch 4G services
  • The company plans to double its customer base and will use the 1,800 MHz frequency band
  • 4G services are scheduled to begin nationwide from July 30th, with activity reports due every three months

The Nepal Telecommunication Association (NTA) has officially approved Smart Telecom to begin offering 4G services in the country. As Nepal's third-largest mobile network provider, Smart Telecom now intends to at least double its current subscriber base with this expansion. The telecom company originally launched its services in rural areas before moving into key cities such as Palpa, Syangja, Pokhara, Bhairahwa, Butwal, and Kathmandu. Network rollout is also underway in additional locations, including Nepalgunj, Chitwan, and Birgunj.

Smart Telecom submitted its application for 4G operating permission to the government back in November 2016. After verifying that the company fulfilled all necessary obligations, the NTA granted approval yesterday during a press conference. Under the approved terms, Smart Telecom will be permitted to provide 4G services using the 1,800 MHz frequency band. The company has reportedly already paid all required fees, including frequency charges, royalties, and renewal costs.

According to the NTA, Smart Telecom is now the latest participant in Nepal's competition to deliver high-quality 4G connectivity. The telecom announced that it will commence its 4G network rollout across Nepal starting July 30th and will submit progress updates to authorities every three months.
