The Current Status of Andy Rubin's Essential Phone

Nearly two months have passed since Andy Rubin’s Essential introduced the PH-1, commonly called the Essential Phone, yet the device has still not entered mass production or reached customers. Rubin had originally pledged that shipments would commence approximately two weeks prior, indicating a clear delay in the launch timeline. Compounding the situation, Essential’s head of communication, Andy Fouché, and VP of marketing, Brian Wallace, have both departed the company. Despite these setbacks, there is no confirmed internal turmoil, and Essential remains financially robust with $300 million in reserves.

Although the missed shipping date raises eyebrows, Essential has indicated that those who pre-ordered the device will need to endure only a few more weeks of waiting. The company plans to expand beyond the US market, though its recent reputation may affect the likelihood of a swift international rollout. The phone has already secured FCC approval, clearing a key regulatory hurdle.

Rubin has highlighted several unique aspects of the PH-1, including its edge-to-edge display, magnetic modular dock, and a promised “stock” Android experience with monthly security updates. The device sports a 5.7-inch LTPS IPS LCD panel with a dense 1312 x 2560 pixel resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Under the hood, it is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM and a fixed 128GB storage option. Camera duties are handled by a dual 13MP rear setup and an 8MP front camera. Additional specs include Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity and a 3040mAh battery. While the Essential PH-1 has yet to prove itself in the market, interest remains high to see whether it can fulfill Rubin’s ambitious promises.
