In an exciting development for mixed reality, the Apple Vision Pro headset has been deployed in a London hospital for spine surgery, marking a potential breakthrough in healthcare technology. Surgeons at Cromwell Hospital, along with lead scrub nurse Suvi Verho, used the device during a procedure on a male patient’s spine. The nurse wore the Vision Pro to monitor the entire operation and select necessary tools in real time.

The system ran AI software developed by eXeX, which according to surgeon Syed Aftab, “is seamless and has improved efficiency within the Complex Spine team.” He noted that the software could effectively simulate the experience of a nurse with a decade of expertise, even for someone entirely new to the role. Verho echoed this sentiment, stating that the technology “eliminates human error” and “eliminates the guesswork,” calling it a “game-changer” that greatly boosted her confidence during the surgery.

This pilot demonstrates how the Apple Vision Pro could reshape medical training and procedure support. Additional healthcare applications are already emerging, such as Stryker’s Mako SmartRobotics app for hip and knee replacements, along with tools for surgical training and mental health assistance. As more mixed reality solutions are developed, the integration of advanced tech like the Vision Pro may significantly improve patient care and outcomes.
