Apple Debuts Powerful Mac Pro and New Operating Systems at WWDC 2019

During its Worldwide Developers Conference in 2019, Apple showcased a series of major updates spanning hardware and software. The event highlighted the launch of the much-anticipated Mac Pro, a new high-end display, and fresh operating systems for iPad, Mac, iPhone, and Apple Watch users.

Mac Pro: A New Era of Power

After years of anticipation, Apple finally unveiled the new Mac Pro. Known for its distinctive 'cheese grater' aesthetic, the device’s true strength lies in its internal capabilities. The base model includes an octa-core Intel Xeon W processor clocked at 3.5 GHz, turbo boosting to 4 GHz, alongside 32 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. It utilizes AMD Radeon Pro 850X graphics, with support for up to four cards in a single unit. The fully-loaded version, however, is where the Mac Pro truly shines, featuring a massive 28-core Intel Xeon W processor and an impressive 1.5 TB of RAM. This top-tier configuration also includes an AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics card with 64 GB of dedicated graphics memory, along with a separate graphics accelerator. Although Apple did not disclose pricing for the Mac Pro, estimates suggest it could range from $5,999 for the base model to as high as $50,000 for the most powerful configuration.

Apple Pro Display XDR: A Visual Masterpiece

To complement the new Mac Pro, Apple introduced the 6K Retina Pro Display XDR. This 31.6-inch display boasts a stunning 6K resolution and is fully HDR enabled, offering a remarkable 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. Customers can choose between a glossy or matte finish, though the matte option comes at a premium. The display is priced at $6,000, with a high-spec version reaching $12,000. Additionally, Apple will sell a dedicated stand for $1,000.

iPadOS: Enhanced Tablet Experience

Apple introduced iPadOS, a new operating system designed specifically for iPads, replacing the previous iOS on these devices. iPadOS brings a redesigned home screen, improved multitasking capabilities, and new gestures for easier navigation. The update also enhances the Files app and offers better support for the Apple Pencil. Notably, iPadOS includes a dark theme, adding a modern visual option for users.

macOS Catalina: Streamlined and Connected

The latest version of macOS, now named Catalina, brings several enhancements to the Mac experience. A standout feature is Sidecar, which enables seamless interaction between MacBooks and iPads, allowing users to use their tablet as a second display or drawing surface. Apple has also replaced the iTunes app with dedicated applications for Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV. macOS Catalina includes improved security features, Voice Control, and a new screen-time dashboard, giving users greater insights into their device usage.

iOS 13: Dark Theme and Expanded Capabilities

iOS 13 introduces a long-awaited dark theme for iPhones, applicable across system applications. The update also focuses on improving Apple Maps, using camera data similar to Google’s approach to enhance accuracy and detail. Additional features in iOS 13 include enhanced security options, updated Memoji characters, portrait lighting effects, and advanced photo and video editing tools.

WatchOS 6: More Independent Features for Apple Watch

WatchOS 6 brings notable updates to the Apple Watch, including a standalone App Store that no longer requires an iPhone for access. New watch faces and a pride flag strap option offer more personalization. The update also adds a Calculator app and support for voice memos. Health tracking capabilities are expanded with period cycle monitoring, and the Noise app now measures ambient decibel levels to alert users when noise becomes potentially harmful.
