Asus and Microsoft have launched two new handheld gaming devices in Nepal: the Asus ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-spec Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. These devices combine Asus hardware with a customized version of Windows 11 tailored for handheld use, offering an experience that feels familiar to existing Xbox users.

Both units run a special Windows build that includes a full-screen Xbox mode made for controller input. They support games from the Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games, and come preloaded with Xbox Game Pass and the latest version of Roblox. Microsoft is also developing a game verification system to ensure compatibility, although Gaming Copilot support was not emphasized in this release.

When it comes to performance, the two models differ substantially. The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is powered by the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, while the standard Ally uses the Ryzen Z2 A. The Z2 A chip is notably less powerful, featuring only four cores and eight threads compared to the Z2 Extreme’s eight cores and sixteen threads. It also relies on the older Zen 2 CPU architecture and RDNA 2 graphics, whereas the Z2 Extreme uses the newer Zen 5 CPU and RDNA 3.5 GPU. For anything beyond light or indie titles, the regular Ally may struggle, making the Ally X a much better choice for serious gaming.

The Ally X also offers 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a generous 1TB of storage, compared to the Ally’s 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB storage.

Display-wise, both devices feature a 7-inch IPS LCD panel with 1080p resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The screens are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and include DXC anti-reflection coating for reduced glare. While neither model includes an OLED option, they both deliver 100% sRGB coverage, 500 nits of peak brightness, and support for AMD FreeSync Premium.

Controller design follows the classic Xbox Wireless Controller layout seen on previous Ally models, now including an official Xbox button. Both devices use Hall Effect sensors for the L and R triggers, which helps maintain accurate control over time. Connectivity includes two USB-C ports (with one Thunderbolt 4 port on the Ally X), a headphone jack, and a UHS-II microSD card slot. Wireless options consist of WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.

Battery life is another area where the Ally X excels, with an 80Wh pack compared to the Ally’s 60Wh. This larger battery does add slight weight, making the Ally X a bit heavier at 715 grams versus the Ally’s 670 grams.

The Asus ROG Xbox Ally is priced at NPR 110,900, while the Ally X costs NPR 168,900. Both devices are available from Nagmani International, an authorized Asus distributor in Nepal, and come with a standard one-year warranty.
