OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Group Chats Worldwide

OpenAI has finally introduced ChatGPT Group Chats, a feature many users have been eagerly anticipating. Initially tested in Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, and South Korea, the group chat functionality is now being released globally for all logged-in users across both web and mobile platforms. The update will reach everyone over the next few days.

How Group Chats Function

To start a group chat, users can tap the people icon located in the top-right corner of any conversation. Adding a new participant creates a separate copy of the chat, preserving the original. Invite links allow for groups of one to twenty people, and anyone in the group can share them. When joining or creating a group, users must provide a short profile including their name, username, and photo. All group chats appear in a dedicated section of the sidebar.

Key Features

The new group chats come packed with useful tools. Users can search within chats, upload images and files, generate images, and use voice dictation. The system employs GPT-5.1 Auto to select the most appropriate model for each prompt based on the user’s plan. Although the AI decides when to respond naturally, mentioning “ChatGPT” will ensure a reply. ChatGPT can react to messages with emojis, reference profile photos, and even create personalized images based on those photos.

Additional controls let users name the group, add or remove participants (except the creator), mute notifications, and set custom instructions for ChatGPT. All members can see who is part of the group, and anyone can leave at any time. If a user under 18 joins, ChatGPT automatically adjusts content for safety, and parents or guardians can disable group chats entirely using parental controls.

Privacy and Security

OpenAI has designed group chats to enhance collaboration without compromising privacy. Group conversations remain separate from private chats, and ChatGPT does not share personal memories with others, nor does it use or create new memories from group interactions. Rate limits apply only when ChatGPT responds, and messages exchanged between participants are unrestricted.

Final Thoughts

The new ChatGPT Group Chats offer a robust platform for teamwork, event planning, brainstorming, and more. While the feature shows great promise, its long-term impact and effectiveness remain to be seen as more users explore its capabilities.
