Chhito Charge: A New Power Bank Rental Service in Nepal

Nepal has launched an intriguing new service with Chhito Charge, a startup enabling users to rent power banks on the go. The model operates through a simple scan-and-go system where users visit designated stations, scan a QR code via a mobile app, borrow a power bank, and return it to any convenient location.

After downloading the app for Android or iOS, users can view nearby stations, with the service currently available at over 200 locations across the country. Rental options include a 1-day plan for NPR 100, a 3-day plan for NPR 300, and a monthly plan for NPR 1,000. Payment is processed through popular local methods such as FonePay, though the current QR-based system requires users to manually upload the code into their chosen app, which can pose challenges for some.

The power banks themselves are brightly colored in orange and feature three charging cables: USB-C, Lightning, and Micro USB, catering to nearly all modern smartphones. With a capacity of 5,000 mAh (approximately 18.5 Wh) and a standard 10W output, the units can provide a partial to full charge for most devices after a single use. Testing revealed that the power bank could replenish around 20% charge during a 20-minute walk while running a GPS-intensive app, demonstrating adequate performance for everyday needs.

While the concept shows strong potential, several areas need improvement. The app occasionally struggles with map loading and navigation accuracy, and the registration process features low-contrast white text on a white background. Additionally, the payment flow could be streamlined by displaying the QR code directly at the station rather than requiring users to download or capture it through their phones. Despite these hurdles, the service represents a convenient solution for travelers and busy individuals who need quick power access without carrying bulky chargers.

For the model to succeed long-term, consistent maintenance and reliable operations will be crucial. Past public charging initiatives in Nepal have faltered due to poor upkeep, so the Chhito Charge team will need to ensure their network remains functional and widely available. If these challenges are addressed, the service could become an essential utility for Nepal’s growing smartphone user base.
