Corning Launches Gorilla Glass 6 with Enhanced Drop Resistance
Corning, a leading name in display protection technology, has unveiled Gorilla Glass 6, the sixth generation of its popular toughened glass solution. Known for its ability to shield smartphone screens from impacts, Gorilla Glass has become a standard feature in many devices. The new version promises even greater durability, with engineers reporting that it can survive more drops than its predecessor, Gorilla Glass 5.
According to Corning, Gorilla Glass 6 can endure up to twice as many drops as Gorilla Glass 5. This improvement stems from a changed chemical composition in the glass, which allows for higher levels of compression during production. Testing indicates that the glass can survive 15 drops from a height of 1 meter before breaking.
John Bayne, Vice President and General Manager of Corning Gorilla Glass, stated, “Corning Gorilla Glass 6 improves upon Gorilla Glass 5 by surviving drops from higher heights, but, more importantly, has been engineered to survive multiple drops. This enables the Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage.”
Although Gorilla Glass has been integrated into over six billion devices across 45 brands, this latest version is still in the production phase and undergoing evaluation by potential customers. It may take several months after testing before the glass appears in commercial products.
Since its debut in September 2011, Gorilla Glass has been a preferred choice for manufacturers worldwide, serving not only consumer electronics but also automotive and architectural applications.
