Dell G7 Gaming Laptop Review: Performance Focused Design
Dell has refreshed its gaming lineup with the new G-series, stepping away from the Inspiron naming and introducing the G7 as a performance-oriented option. We put this laptop through its paces to see what it offers.
Design and Build
The G7 sports a distinctive look with two color options: white and blue, or black and blue. Our test unit featured the black and blue variant, which, while not as eye-catching as the white model, still delivers a sporty aesthetic with sharp edges and vented rear resembling a sports car hood. Built primarily from plastic, the laptop feels durable despite its bulk. Large rear fans aid in heat dissipation, though the unit weighs in at a substantial 2.6 kg, making it less portable for all-day use.
Display
The 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) screen, while adequate for gaming, falls short in several areas. It carries a 60 Hz refresh rate,可调到100 Hz但风险较高, and covers only 73% of the standard RGB color space and 56% of Adobe RGB. Peak brightness reaches just 250 nits, which is low for multimedia but acceptable for gaming, especially in low-light conditions. Large bezels reduce the perceived screen size and detract from the overall viewing experience, making it less ideal for movie watching or content creation.
Performance
At its core, the G7 packs an 8th-gen Intel i7-8750 six-core processor, capable of speeds up to 4.1 GHz with Turbo Boost. This CPU, paired with 8 GB of RAM (though a 16 GB variant exists), handles gaming and general tasks efficiently, though heavy titles may stutter with only 8 GB. The RAM is split across two slots with two 4 GB modules, making upgrades costly and cumbersome. Graphics duties are handled by a 6 GB NVidia GTX 1060 Max-Q, which delivers solid performance for modern games at Full HD and Ultra settings, with reduced heat output compared to the standard GTX 1060.
Storage and Battery
Our review unit featured a 256 GB M.2 SSD, which surprisingly delivered only 500 MB/s read and 300 MB/s write speeds—far below previous generations. Despite this, everyday use remains smooth, with any sluggishness barely noticeable. The 56 Wh battery offers around four hours of typical use, which is sufficient but could be better considering the laptop’s size.
Keyboard and Trackpad
The keyboard provides a comfortable 1.4 mm key travel but lacks tactile feedback. Its blue backlighting adds flair but can strain eyes during extended night sessions. The 4.1 x 3.1 inch trackpad works well with Windows Precision Drivers, supporting most gestures, though its plastic surface occasionally misses inputs like pinch-zoom.
Ports and Audio
The G7 includes three USB 3.1 Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, a USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, a Gigabit Ethernet port, an SD card slot, a Noble-lock security slot, and a headphone jack. Audio from the front-facing speakers is clear and loud, capturing subtle in-game sounds effectively. However, the built-in webcam produces noisy images and is unsuitable for streaming, though adequate for basic video calls.
Verdict
The Dell G7 delivers on its promise of core gaming performance, with a powerful CPU and capable graphics card. However, its display limitations, modest battery life, and restrictive RAM configuration are notable drawbacks. Imported directly from the US for around NPR 126,000, it represents good value, but the local market price of NPR 145,000 might prompt consideration of alternatives like MSI’s 8th-gen models or Acer options. For budget-focused gamers prioritizing performance, the G7 is a solid choice, especially if you opt for the 16 GB RAM variant to avoid future upgrade hassles.
