Dyson Announces Ambitious Plans for Home Cleaning Robots

Key Takeaways
- Dyson is developing autonomous robots designed for home cleaning tasks
- The company plans to invest £2.75 billion in robotics and related tech from 2020 to 2025
- No launch date has been confirmed, but Dyson targets a market debut around 2030
Dyson, a brand best known for its vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and bladeless fans, is venturing into a new domain: home robotics. The company revealed its progress at the 39th IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Philadelphia, showcasing early work on mechanical limbs designed to mimic human hand movements.
A video on Dyson’s official YouTube channel demonstrated the robot performing basic tasks such as picking up a teddy bear, retrieving a plate, and cleaning a sofa. These actions, simple for humans, remain challenging for robots, highlighting the complexity of everyday household chores.
To support this ambitious push, Dyson intends to build the UK’s largest robotics research center at its Hullavington Airfield facility. The company will invest £600 million this year alone in research across robotics, batteries, and other advanced technologies, with a total commitment of around £2.75 billion planned between 2020 and 2025.
Dyson is also expanding its workforce, having hired 2,000 people in 2022 and aiming to recruit an additional 700 robotics engineers over the next five years. Although the robots are still in research and training phases, Dyson expects they could reach consumers by 2030.
