The Austrian company Tec-Innovation, supported by Graz University of Technology, has launched the InnoMake smart shoe, a groundbreaking device designed to help blind and visually impaired individuals detect and avoid obstacles. These shoes incorporate advanced technology to provide real-time warnings about barriers in the path.

Key Features and Functionality

Each InnoMake shoe includes a waterproof ultrasonic sensor mounted at the front, which emits signals to detect nearby objects. When an obstacle is detected, the user receives alerts through vibrations and audible cues. The frequency of the vibrations increases as the obstacle gets closer, giving the wearer clear feedback about the distance and urgency of the situation.

In addition to the ultrasonic sensor, the shoe integrates a camera module and a dedicated processor that runs a proprietary algorithm to identify the type of obstacle—whether it is a wall, a car, or a staircase. This distinction is crucial for navigating safely, as different obstacles require different responses. An LED light also flashes when an obstacle is detected, offering an extra visual cue for the user.

A button located on the back of the shoe allows users to adjust settings in real time. Users can check the battery level and toggle the LED light for improved visibility. The shoes also feature an intelligent mode that automatically pauses operation when the user is stationary, such as when sitting down. A Micro-USB charging port is used, and the battery can be fully recharged in about three hours.

Companion App and Feedback System

The InnoMake app, available for free on iOS platforms, works in conjunction with the shoes. While the shoes themselves provide vibrational feedback, the app delivers auditory alerts through either the user’s smartphone or bone conduction headphones connected to the phone. This dual feedback system enables users to determine whether an obstacle alert originates from the left or right shoe, enhancing spatial awareness during movement.

Pricing and Availability

The InnoMake smart shoe is priced at £2,700. This cost includes one device per shoe, installation on either a new pair of shoes or an existing pair, and a USB charger. As of now, the product is available only in Austria and Germany, with no announced plans for broader international distribution.
