Khalti Mobile Payment App Debuts in Nepal

Key Takeaways

  • Khalti launched at CAN Infotech 2017 with over 3,000 users in its first few days
  • Supports mobile top-up, landline, Dish Home, Sim TV, ADSL, and several internet service provider payments
  • Currently limited to Nepal Investment Bank account holders for fund deposits, with future bank partnerships planned

A new player has entered Nepal’s digital payment arena with the launch of Khalti, introduced recently at the CAN Info-Tech event. Within just a few days, the app has already signed up more than 3,000 users, marking a strong start for the service.

The Khalti app features a clean, modern interface that follows material design principles, making it both visually appealing and simple to navigate. After registering, users land on a dashboard displaying supported services such as mobile top-ups, landline bill payments, Dish Home recharges, Sim TV recharges, ADSL bill payments, as well as options for Recharge Cards, Subisu, and Worldlink bill payments. While the app currently lacks general online payment capabilities, these are expected to roll out in future updates.

One standout perk is the 2 percent cash back offered on mobile top-ups. However, the Worldlink bill payment feature is restricted to volume-based users. The app also includes a convenient fund transfer option, allowing users to send money to others easily. To begin transactions, users must first deposit funds into their Khalti account—a process currently limited to those with an account at Nepal Investment Bank. The service plans to collaborate with additional major banks in the near future. For existing Nepal Investment Bank customers, executing payments requires just two to three taps, making the process remarkably streamlined.

At present, Khalti is available only for Android devices.
