Microsoft Unveils Budget-Friendly Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL Smartphones

Microsoft has officially launched the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL at Mobile World Congress 2015, focusing on the budget smartphone market ahead of the broader Windows 10 rollout. These devices aim to deliver reliable performance and solid features at an accessible price point, competing directly with options like the Moto G 2nd Generation, Asus Zenfone 5, and Xiaomi Redmi Note.

The Lumia 640 sports a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Under the hood, it uses a Snapdragon 400 chipset, a quad-core Cortex-A7 processor running at 1.2GHz, and 1GB of RAM. Storage starts at 8GB internally but can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD. The phone includes an 8MP rear camera with an LED flashlight and a 1MP front camera, capable of recording 1080p video at 30 frames per second on the rear and 720p on the front. It supports dual SIMs with 3G and LTE connectivity and is powered by a 2500mAh battery. The Lumia 640 comes in Cyan, Orange, Black, and White color options.

The Lumia 640 XL features a larger 5.7-inch IPS display, also with 1280 x 720 resolution but enhanced with Clear Black technology for improved contrast. It shares the same Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of expandable storage as the standard model. However, the XL boasts a more impressive 13MP rear camera equipped with a Carl Zeiss f/2.0 lens and a 1/3-inch sensor, along with a 5MP front camera featuring a wide-angle 24mm lens. Both cameras on the XL can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Like the smaller model, it supports dual SIMs with 3G and LTE and is powered by a larger 3000mAh battery. The Lumia 640 XL is available in Orange, MetroPCS, and Telefonica color options.

As part of the launch, Microsoft is offering a complimentary one-year subscription to Office 365, 1TB of OneDrive storage, and 60 Skype minutes per month. Specific pricing and availability details have not yet been announced but are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
