Nepal Takes Digital Payments Global with NepalPay and National Card Switch
The Nepali FinTech landscape is advancing with the international rollout of two key domestic payment systems: the NepalPay Card and the National Card Switch. Launched domestically earlier this year by Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL), these services have now expanded to over 190 countries through a strategic alliance with the US-based Discover Network.
Understanding the Systems
The National Card Switch functions as Nepal's centralized platform for managing card transactions domestically. Until now, Nepali banks and financial institutions have depended on international networks like Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay to process card payments. This arrangement required routing transactions overseas and resulted in additional fees that were passed on to consumers through annual card charges and other service costs.
The NepalPay Card mirrors international brands such as Visa and Mastercard but operates entirely on Nepali servers. Introduced alongside the National Card Switch, it supports various card types including debit, credit, prepaid and virtual cards. To date, 34 banks and financial institutions have joined the National Payment Switch as participating members.
Global Availability and Benefits
With the global launch, NepalPay cards can now be used at automated teller machines and point-of-sale terminals worldwide. The partnership with Discover Network enhances Nepal's presence in international markets and provides Nepali merchants with access to transactions from over 378 million cards through existing network alliances and Diners Club collaborations.
According to Neelesh Man Singh Pradhan, CEO of NCHL, “Our collaboration with Discovery Networks demonstrates our dedication to offering a secure, reliable, and globally accepted payment card scheme with international recognition.” Subhrajit Basu, Vice President of International Markets at Discover, added that the partnership will expand their services across the Asia-Pacific region while delivering secure payment options for both merchants and cardholders.
Potential Impact on Nepal
This development marks a significant milestone for Nepal's financial technology sector. By reducing dependence on foreign payment switches, the country can retain transaction revenue that previously flowed abroad. As more Nepali banks adopt NepalPay, operational and card-related expenses could decrease for both institutions and consumers.
The international availability may also open doors for Nepali Rupees (NPR) billing on global app stores and support recurring cross-border digital payments, provided app stores integrate NepalPay and Nepal's central bank and financial institutions permit such transactions.
This progression positions Nepal toward greater financial self-sufficiency and modern digital payment capabilities.
