Nothing Phone (3) Demo Units Found Displaying Stock Photos as Camera Samples

Nothing has stumbled into a notable marketing misstep with its Phone (3) demo units, which were found displaying stock photographs labeled as images captured by the device’s community. The discovery has sparked scrutiny and raised questions about the company’s internal processes.

In store demo units, images tagged as “Judge for yourself. Here’s what our community has captured with Phone (3)” were actually sourced from Stills, a stock photo marketplace. Examples include generic shots such as “A Glass Filled With Sparkling Liquid” and “A Tall Building With A Person By The Window.” One image was traced to an Instagram user, snapsbyfox, who took a rounded headlight photo in 2023 using a Fujifilm X-H2S—well before the Phone (3) was announced.

Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis addressed the issue on X, explaining that the stock images were used as placeholders roughly four months before the launch. The intention was to replace them with actual Phone (3) samples through updated live demo units before mass production. However, some demo units received the updates, while others did not. Evangelidis noted that previous Nothing models used photos from older devices as placeholders, but a new team opted for stock images this time, calling it a clear mistake. An internal investigation is underway to prevent a recurrence, and the company is collaborating with promoters to update all remaining demo units.

For Nothing, this is an embarrassing slip but likely recoverable, as the Phone (3) will ultimately be judged on its actual camera performance rather than demo images. The incident does, however, underline potential gaps in quality control. For consumers, it serves as a reminder to approach demo unit content with caution, as companies occasionally make errors, including misrepresenting stock photos as real camera samples.

The Phone (3) remains on track, and its performance will be evaluated based on real-world use rather than these mislabeled placeholder images.
