Nepal Telecom, the country's state-owned telecommunications provider, is reportedly conducting trials of 4G connectivity across its infrastructure. This development comes after the company obtained official authorization to deploy 4G services in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Industry whispers suggest an official launch could occur during the second week of Poush, contingent on successful test outcomes.

The anticipated service will utilize FDD band 3 technology operating at 1800MHz frequencies. Users will need handsets supporting this specific band to fully benefit from the upgraded network. Nepal Telecom plans to achieve this by enhancing both hardware and software elements within its current systems.

4G, or fourth-generation mobile technology, represents a substantial evolution over the existing 3G infrastructure. Frequently paired with LTE (Long Term Evolution), this standard focuses on delivering faster, more stable mobile broadband for smartphones, tablets, and laptops. While theoretical peak speeds reach 100 megabits per second, practical speeds typically fall somewhat lower but still significantly outperform 3G performance metrics. The technology relies on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) to efficiently manage data transmission through MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) techniques.

Although NTC secured the initial 4G licensing approval, competitor Ncell has also expressed interest in acquiring similar permissions. The Ministry of Information and Communication has indicated plans to expand 3G coverage nationwide while introducing 4G services in Kathmandu and several major suburban areas. One notable challenge with 4G involves voice call handling, as traditional circuit-switched telephony isn't natively supported. Users can however utilize VoLTE (Voice over LTE) capabilities through applications such as Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook Messenger. Without VoLTE support, call connections will automatically revert to either 3G or 2G networks.

The push toward faster mobile internet addresses several practical needs. Enhanced connectivity promises more reliable voice and video calls, quicker file transfers for large media assets, smoother live streaming experiences without buffering delays, and overall contributions to national development through improved digital infrastructure.
