Key Takeaways
- Powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor ensures smooth performance

- Long battery life with rapid 100W wired charging
- Camera setup lacks versatility compared to the OnePlus 12
- Overpriced in Nepal compared to regional competitors
The OnePlus 12R positions itself as a compelling mid-range option, blending flagship-like features with a more accessible price tag. However, its appeal in the Nepali market is hampered by a significant pricing disadvantage.
Design and Build The OnePlus 12R carries forward the brand's premium aesthetic, featuring a glass front with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, an aluminum frame, and a glass back. Its sleek profile, gentle curves, and circular camera cutout mirror the design language of the flagship OnePlus 12. Despite some compromises like weaker haptics and a downgrade to Gorilla Glass 5 on the back, the phone feels solid and comfortable in hand. Notable omissions include the alert slider and IR blaster, but these are minor losses in the grand scheme.
Display The display remains a strong point, utilizing the same X1 OLED panel from BOE as the OnePlus 12, protected by Corning's second-gen Victus glass. While slightly smaller and lower resolution than its sibling, the 6.78-inch ProXDR AMOLED screen delivers excellent color accuracy, deep blacks, and vibrant brightness levels. The 120Hz refresh rate with LTPO tech promises adaptive smoothing, though my review unit only cycled between 60Hz and 120Hz. The "Aqua Touch" feature, allowing interaction with a wet screen, proved surprisingly useful during testing.
Performance Equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the OnePlus 12R handles everyday tasks and demanding games with ease. Paired with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage, it shows no significant lag or stuttering. Gaming performance matches the OnePlus 12, with Genshin Impact running smoothly at maximum settings. However, the 12R lacks a few gaming enhancements found on the flagship, like Hyper Resolution and Adaptive Frame Boost, though these are largely unused in current titles.
Battery and Charging A standout feature is the robust 5500mAh battery, which easily lasted 7-8 hours of heavy use, including gaming and multimedia consumption. The included 100W SuperVOOC charger proved incredibly fast, reaching 50% in just 10 minutes and a full charge in under half an hour. The absence of wireless charging is disappointing, but the excellent battery life and rapid wired charging mitigate this drawback.
Software Running Android 14 with OxygenOS 14, the software experience is clean, optimized, and largely bloatware-free. However, the 12R falls short of the OnePlus 12 in update commitment, offering only three OS generations and four years of security updates compared to the flagship's four and five years respectively. A minor bug causing YouTube stuttering in landscape mode also needs addressing.
Cameras The camera department reveals the most significant gaps versus the OnePlus 12. The 12R retains last year's setup: a 50MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, and a largely unused 2MP macro lens, lacking any Hasselblad tuning. While the primary sensor produces excellent results, often surpassing the OnePlus 12 in natural white balance, the ultrawide and selfie cameras leave much to be desired. The 12R struggles with color shift, dynamic range, and low-light performance when compared to its sibling. Videography is similarly constrained, with 4K 60fps limited to the main camera and mediocre quality from the ultrawide and selfie lenses.
Verdict The OnePlus 12R is undoubtedly a capable device with a premium design, a fantastic display, strong performance, and excellent battery life. However, its camera limitations and, crucially, its excessively high price in Nepal prevent it from being a clear winner. While it deserves consideration from those seeking a semi-flagship experience, the upcoming iQOO Neo9 Pro poses a serious challenge, offering potentially superior software and hardware at a more competitive price point.
