Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 With 3nm Process and Oryon CPU

Qualcomm has officially launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a high-performance chipset designed to sit just below its flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Utilizing the same advanced 3nm manufacturing process and third-generation Oryon CPU architecture as the top-tier model, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 features slightly toned-down specifications to achieve a more competitive price point.

Key Specifications and Features

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 employs an octa-core CPU configuration, consisting of two Prime cores clocked at 3.8GHz and six Performance cores running at 3.32GHz. While the Prime cores are slightly slower than those in the Elite Gen 5 (which hit 4.6GHz), and the Performance cores are also lower-clocked, Qualcomm claims this chip delivers a 36% improvement in CPU performance, 11% better GPU output, and a substantial 46% increase in AI processing speed compared to the two-year-old Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Overall system-on-chip power efficiency has reportedly improved by 13%.

The GPU department sees the Adreno 840, a scaled-down version of the Elite Gen 5's GPU. It supports Frame Motion Engine 3.0 for smoother frame rates in compatible games but lacks Adreno High-Performance Memory support, which enhances memory bandwidth and reduces latency in graphics-heavy tasks. However, Qualcomm suggests that most users, including even dedicated gamers, are unlikely to notice a significant difference in everyday use.

For AI capabilities, the chip integrates a Hexagon NPU that provides a 46% speed boost over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The NPU also supports multi-modal AI input, enabling simultaneous processing of text, image, audio, and video data on-device.

Image processing is handled by the Spectra ISP, which typically supports advanced features such as computational photography, multi-frame noise reduction, and real-time HDR processing, although Qualcomm has not released detailed specifications for this iteration.

Connectivity remains unchanged from the top-tier offerings, with the inclusion of the X80 5G Modem-RF System. This ensures users receive the same robust 5G performance and network features found in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Expected Devices and Availability

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 was recently announced, with the OnePlus Ace 6T/15R confirmed as the first device to feature the chip. Additional launches are anticipated from brands such as iQOO, Motorola, and Vivo in the coming months.
