Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Review: A Handy Tracker for Samsung Users

Samsung introduced the Galaxy SmartTag alongside the Galaxy S21 series in January, and after spending over a month with the device, it's clear that it fills a niche for those prone to misplacing everyday items. Weighing just 13 grams and measuring 1.54 x 1.54 x 0.39 inches, the SmartTag boasts a subtle, diamond-shaped design with rounded corners and a keyhole for attachment. Its IP53 rating offers dust and water resistance suitable for everyday use, though the slightly protruding form makes it ill-advised for wallet storage.

The tracker leverages Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 to connect with Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 8 or higher through the SmartThings app. Setup is straightforward: press the single button on the tag once, and it appears in the app for registration. Users can configure various interactions, such as single-press or hold actions, and enable smartphone-finding functionality by pressing the button twice.

When an attached item goes missing, the app provides three tools: "search nearby," "navigate," and "ring.“ The "search nearby" feature employs an audio-based heat map, guiding users toward the tag by shifting from "cold" to "hot“ as they close in. While helpful, the guidance can occasionally mislead. The "navigate" option displays the tag's last known location on a map, though it depends on other nearby Samsung devices with Bluetooth enabled to update the position, meaning real-time tracking isn't guaranteed. The most reliable tool is the "ring“ function, which emits an audible 89dB beep, easily heard even in noisy environments. Users can also customize the ringtone through the app.

One major drawback is the tracker's exclusivity to Samsung devices. While this integration enables additional smart home control features, it alienates users of other Android or iOS platforms. During testing, the device performed well for locating keys and smartphones within a range of approximately 50 to 55 meters. However, attempts to track a pet proved challenging due to frequent disconnections caused by the dog's movement.

Power comes from a user-replaceable CR2032 battery, rated to last around 300 days under typical use. The back panel features a small slot for easy battery swaps, though users should remember to schedule replacements.

Overall, the Galaxy SmartTag succeeds as a practical, easy-to-use tracker for Samsung ecosystem users who struggle with misplaced items. Its effectiveness is undeniable within its intended environment, but the lack of cross-platform support prevents broader appeal.
