UK Researchers Develop Smartphone App to Identify Impaired Walking as a Drunk Driving Detector

Scientists from the UK have introduced an innovative smartphone application designed to detect alcohol impairment by studying walking patterns, moving beyond traditional breathalyzer methods. This new tool assesses whether a person maintains steady gait, flagging instability as a possible sign of intoxication after analyzing at least ten steps.

The technology draws inspiration from common depictions of drunk individuals stumbling in films and cartoons. It monitors movement in multiple directions using the device’s built-in accelerometer. During initial trials in the UK, the app correctly identified intoxicated participants with 93 percent accuracy. Researchers had 17 volunteers, aged 21 to 41, consume vodka mixed with lime juice until their blood alcohol level reached 80 milligrams per 100 ml. Over seven hours, these individuals repeatedly walked 20 steps every two hours while researchers recorded their movements.

Beyond law enforcement, the app could offer valuable features for families. Future updates may enable smartphones to automatically alert loved ones when intoxication is detected, allowing others to intervene and prevent accidents. The tool also holds potential to warn users when they exceed safe alcohol limits, promoting responsible behavior and reducing the risks associated with drunk driving.
