Umidigi S2 Pro Review: A Strong Midrange Contender with Major Flaws

The Umidigi S2 Pro positions itself as a compelling midrange smartphone, packing in features that many users will appreciate, but it also carries some significant drawbacks that could deter buyers. With a focus on design, battery life, and storage, the device aims to compete in a crowded market, though its execution leaves room for improvement.

Design and Build

Right from the first glance, the Umidigi S2 Pro stands out with its vibrant red finish, though a more subdued black option is also available. The phone features a unibody metal construction that feels premium in hand, despite being a bit on the chunky side. Its curved edges help mask the thickness, and the polished back can be slippery, so using the included back cover is recommended. Remarkably, the phone resisted scratches and fingerprints throughout the review period, even after being tossed around in pockets with keys. An added bonus is its splash and dust resistance, a feature seldom seen in this price bracket.

Display

The display is a 6-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD with an 18:9 aspect ratio. While it would have been nicer to see an AMOLED panel for deeper blacks and better contrast, the IPS display is still bright, vibrant, and offers solid visibility outdoors with no noticeable color shifts. Gorilla Glass 4 protection ensures durability, and the inclusion of MiraVision allows users to tweak color settings to their liking.

Performance

Powered by the MediaTek Helio P25 octa-core chipset and 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM, the Umidigi S2 Pro handles everyday tasks smoothly. Apps launch quickly, multitasking is efficient, and even demanding games like Asphalt 8 run without major hiccups. PUBG Mobile defaults to a lower setting, which remains playable though occasional lag can occur. The phone does warm up during extended gaming sessions, but nothing excessive. For most users, the performance on offer is more than sufficient.

Software

Running on Android 7.0 Nougat with a heavy UMI OS 2.0 overlay, the software experience is disappointing. The absence of an app drawer and the forced use of Umidigi’s launcher are major missteps, making the interface feel clunky and restrictive. The phone is loaded with bloatware, including duplicate utility apps and proprietary stores, though some can be uninstalled. Features like a blue light filter and anti-theft tools are welcome, but they don’t make up for the overall awkward user experience.

Camera

The dual rear camera setup includes a 13MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary lens designed for bokeh effects, but the results are inconsistent. While the main camera produces saturated, vibrant images with decent detail in good lighting, the bokeh effect often fails, leaving large areas of the scene unblurred or half the subject out of focus. Video recording is limited to 4K, but the quality falls short of expectations. The 16MP front camera is a letdown, producing images with pink tints, grain, and dark spots, even in well-lit conditions. Basic features like face beauty mode and AR stickers are present, but they can’t compensate for the overall poor performance.

Connectivity and Security

The Umidigi S2 Pro omits a headphone jack but includes a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. It supports dual nano-SIM slots, 128GB of internal storage, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and GPS. Security features include a fingerprint sensor and face unlock, though the latter is noticeably slower than comparable solutions on other devices.

Battery

Perhaps the phone’s strongest asset is its enormous 5100mAh battery, delivering nearly two days of use on a single charge. Even with heavy use—social media, photos, and gaming—the author typically ended the day with around 40-50% remaining. Pump Charge 2.0 enables fast charging, getting the device to full capacity in about two hours, which is respectable given the battery size.

Verdict

The Umidigi S2 Pro has clear strengths: a stylish metal body, generous storage, and exceptional battery life. However, its flaws—particularly the weak front camera and an awkward, bloated software experience—hold it back. For users prioritizing endurance and storage, it’s a solid option, but the high official price of Rs. 54,900 in Nepal makes it tough to recommend over more polished alternatives.
