Microsoft Offers Free Windows 10 Upgrade for All Users
Microsoft has announced an ambitious plan to provide a free upgrade to Windows 10 for users of older Windows versions, including those running non-genuine copies of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. This move is particularly significant for regions like Nepal, where many users rely on unlicensed software due to cost barriers.
During a recent interview with Reuters, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating System, confirmed that the company will upgrade “all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10.” To implement this plan, Microsoft is collaborating with major tech firms such as Lenovo, Qihoo 360, and Tencent.
It is important to note that while the upgrade is free, it will not alter the licensing status of non-genuine copies. Devices identified as non-genuine before the upgrade will remain non-genuine afterward. Microsoft emphasizes that non-genuine Windows versions are not published, properly licensed, or supported by the company or its trusted partners. Users of pirated software face increased risks of malware, identity theft, credit card fraud, data exposure, and system performance issues.
The consumer free upgrade applies to qualified new and existing devices running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1. Certain editions, such as Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1, are excluded from this offer. Additionally, customers with Active Software Assurance under volume licensing can upgrade to other Windows 10 enterprise options.
Windows 10 is expected to launch this summer, promising improved security, performance, and a unified experience across devices.
