Xiaomi Unveils 17 Pro with Unique Rear Display and Advanced Camera Setup

Xiaomi has announced the 17 Pro alongside the standard 17 model during a recent event in Beijing. The Pro variant distinguishes itself with an innovative secondary display embedded in the camera module, a feature not commonly seen in recent high-end devices. This article delves into the Xiaomi 17 Pro's specifications, expected pricing in Nepal, and availability details.

The standout feature of the Xiaomi 17 Pro is its 2.7-inch secondary display, situated around the camera module on the rear. Though not entirely novel—similar concepts were explored by Xiaomi with the Mi 11 Ultra and by brands like Yotaphone and Nothing—the integration here is unique. It is built around the camera bump, featuring a rectangular lozenge design that replaces Xiaomi's traditional circular camera layout, with two large lenses on the left side.

This secondary display offers a range of functionalities, including customizable themes, simple clock styles, step counters, animated wallpapers, and animated pets that change appearance based on device status. It also provides real-time notifications for flights, trains, ride-shares, deliveries, and music playback, with a pull-down menu for standard phone alerts. An "AI Pin" feature allows users to pin schedules or QR codes for quick access.

In terms of design and display, the Xiaomi 17 Pro measures 8mm in thickness and weighs 192g, a reasonable size considering the added display and large battery. It includes an in-display fingerprint sensor and supports UWB for precise spatial awareness. The device is available in Black, Cold Smoke Purple, Forest Green, and White.

The primary display is a 6.3-inch M10 LTPO AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1220 x 2656 pixels, variable refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, and a peak brightness of 3,500 nits. The LTPO technology enables the refresh rate to drop to as low as 1Hz for static content, aiding battery efficiency. The phone features uniform 1.18mm bezels using LIPO packaging technology and Dragon Crystal Glass protection.

Camera capabilities are highlighted by a triple 50MP setup tuned by Leica. The main sensor is the Light Hunter 950L, accompanied by a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP telephoto lens. Unlike the Pro Max model, which offers a 5x optical zoom and 30cm macro photography through a periscope setup, the regular Pro uses a standard telephoto lens.

Performance is driven by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, capable of achieving AnTuTu scores between 4 and 4.4 million, ensuring smooth gaming and everyday use. Xiaomi introduces a "Handheld Console Mode" with a separate Retro Handheld Console Case, featuring a physical D-pad and buttons for gaming on the secondary display. However, the practicality of this feature for regular gaming remains questionable.

The device houses a substantial 6,300mAh battery in an L-shaped design with silicon-carbon technology. Xiaomi claims this can last up to two days on a single charge, supported by 100W wired and 50W wireless charging options.

Running on Android 16-based HyperOS 3, the Xiaomi 17 Pro includes HyperIsland, Xiaomi's version of Dynamic Island, and an AI assistant named Hyper XiaoAi that learns user preferences and offers proactive suggestions. The AI can display contextual information on the rear display, such as live flight updates or delivery notifications, without needing to unlock the phone.

Key specifications include a 6.3-inch M10 LTPO AMOLED primary display with a secondary 2.7-inch M10 display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, options of 12GB or 16GB RAM with storage choices from 256GB to 1TB, and a triple 50MP rear camera system with Leica tuning. In China, the Xiaomi 17 Pro starts at CNY 4,999 for the 12GB/256GB variant. In Nepal, the base model is expected to launch around NPR 110,000, with higher configurations priced accordingly.
