Xiaomi Unveils Pad Mini as Compact Android Tablet Option

Xiaomi has introduced the Pad Mini, positioning it as a direct competitor to the iPad Mini in the compact tablet market. With Android options being relatively scarce in this size category, the Pad Mini could attract users seeking a portable, feature-rich tablet experience.

Weighing just 326 grams, the Pad Mini is lightweight and available in Gray and Purple finishes. An optional case with a strap and kickstand enhances one-handed use and hands-free viewing. The 8.8-inch LCD panel boasts a smooth 165Hz refresh rate, 3K resolution, and peak brightness of 700 nits, supporting Dolby Vision and full DC dimming for comfortable extended use.

Under the hood, the tablet is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ processor, paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. It runs Xiaomi's HyperOS, which includes tablet-specific features like workstation mode for multi-window and split-screen multitasking. The device also supports cross-device controls with Xiaomi smartphones and can function as a secondary monitor for PCs. While Xiaomi Focus Pen support is available for note-taking and annotation, pricing details for the stylus have not yet been released.

A sizable 7,500mAh battery fuels the Pad Mini, supporting 67W fast charging and 18W reverse charging. The inclusion of dual USB-C ports is a notable advantage over many competing Android tablets. On the audio front, dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res audio support cater to media consumption needs.

Camera capabilities are basic, with a 13MP rear camera capable of 4K video recording at 30fps and an 8MP front camera. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring future-proof performance. Security features are limited to 2D face unlock, which is not recommended for sensitive applications or payments, and there is no fingerprint sensor, meaning users will need to rely on PINs or passwords for secure access.

Android 16 is expected to bring enhanced desktop productivity tools, a Linux Terminal app, and an expanded AI suite featuring writing assistance, speech recognition, interpretation, and AI art capabilities.

In Nepal, the Xiaomi Pad Mini is expected to start at NPR 70,000 for the base 8GB + 256GB variant, aligning with typical import duties and retailer markups for Xiaomi tablets.
