Samsung Galaxy Gear S3 Frontier Review: A Robust Smartwatch for Daily Use

Smartwatches remain a niche category in Nepal, often hindered by high price points. However, for those willing to invest, the Samsung Galaxy Gear S3 Frontier stands out as a compelling choice. With a price tag of NPR 40,000, this device delivers a blend of durability, functionality, and style that makes it worth considering.

The Gear S3 Frontier boasts an attractive and sturdy design, featuring a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display that offers sharp visuals and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass SR. Its IP68 rating for water and dust resistance provides peace of mind during daily use, and the watch has proven resilient to minor drops and impacts. The watch’s sleek appearance resembles a standard wristwatch, with stainless steel on the back and two physical buttons on the right side—one acting as a back button and the other as a programmable home button. This home button supports a double-tap feature that allows quick access to recent apps, S Voice, S Health, and more.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to the intuitive circular dial, which enhances user interaction and even enables gaming through apps available on the Samsung App Store. Despite a thickness of 12.9mm, the watch feels comfortable, especially with its 22mm straps that suit most wrist sizes.

Under the hood, the Gear S3 Frontier runs on Samsung’s Tizen OS, equipped with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. Users can make calls, send texts, and reply to messages directly from the watch, with options including a T9 keyboard, pre-set replies via the dial, or emojis.

One of the watch’s strongest suits is its health and fitness tracking capabilities. Integrated with Samsung’s S Health app, the Gear S3 Frontier monitors a wide range of activities, from workouts and golfing to stair climbing and prolonged sitting. It also features a heart rate sensor that provides accurate readings, along with additional sensors like an altimeter, barometer, and GPS for comprehensive tracking.

Battery life is impressive, with the 380mAh cell delivering two to three days of use depending on settings and screen brightness. A full charge takes approximately two hours.

However, the Tizen OS does have its limitations, particularly in app support. Compared to platforms like Android Wear 2.0, the selection on Samsung’s App Store is modest, which may restrict some users from fully utilizing the device’s potential.
