Huawei Gplay Mini Early Review and Impressions

Huawei has introduced the Gplay Mini, a new mid-range smartphone available for NRs. 19,999. During our initial hands-on time with the device, we evaluated its design, display, interface, performance, camera, and battery capabilities.

Design

The Gplay Mini features a plastic body with a textured pattern on the rear that gives it a somewhat premium feel. However, the phone is on the heavier side and difficult to manage with a single hand due to its sizable bezels.

Display

Equipped with a 5-inch IPS HD (720p) screen, the display offers decent viewing angles and color accuracy. Unfortunately, it falls short in brightness levels and lacks Gorilla Glass protection.

Interface

The device runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat paired with Huawei’s Emotion UI version 3.0. While this custom interface is an improvement over earlier versions, it still requires refinement to match stock Android’s polish.

Processor and Memory

Powering the Gplay Mini is Huawei’s Kirin 620 chipset, a 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, along with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded via a microSD card slot supporting up to 32GB. In our limited testing, the phone handled multitasking and app switching without noticeable lag, though a full performance review is pending.

Camera

For photography, the Gplay Mini includes a 13MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, capable of producing respectable images for a device in this price range. On the front, a 5MP camera delivers good quality selfies.

Battery

The phone is equipped with a 2550 mAh battery, slightly larger than typical mid-range Huawei models. Although the battery is not user-removable, the device supports dual micro-SIM cards (both 3G capable) and a microSD card slot.

Verdict

With its combination of a decent display, capable processor, and solid camera at under NRs. 20,000, the Huawei Gplay Mini presents strong value for budget-conscious buyers.
