The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, often viewed as two of Apple’s most underwhelming releases in the decade-long iPhone lineage, now face a new challenge: battery swelling. While the arrival of the highly anticipated iPhone X looms, these models have reported a minor yet concerning issue. Though only a small number of cases have surfaced so far, the problem mirrors what occurred with Samsung’s Note 7, albeit without the dangerous outcomes of fires or explosions.

In affected units, the batteries expand, exerting pressure that forces the phone’s casing to pop open. Users have noted this happening either while charging or even immediately after unboxing the device. Reports from credible technology outlets such as Reuters, CNET, and The Verge have documented around seven such instances across Japan, China, Taiwan, Canada, and Greece.

It is important to approach this news cautiously; while it raises valid concerns, it does not definitively indicate a widespread defect. Apple has responded officially, stating, “We are aware and looking into it.” Given that the iPhone 8 launched on September 22, there is still time for Apple to address any potential issues before the imminent release of the iPhone X.
