Nextbit Robin: A Cloud-Powered Android Phone Designed to Eliminate Storage Woes

A group of engineers previously employed at Apple, Google, and HTC have introduced the Nextbit Robin, a new smartphone designed to solve a common frustration: limited internal storage. The company addresses this issue through an integrated cloud storage platform that offloads data and applications to free up space on the device.

The Robin operates by automatically uploading photos and other user data to a private 100GB cloud storage space provided to every user. When internal storage becomes scarce, the system identifies the least-used apps, transfers them to the cloud, and removes them from the phone. If a user later needs an app that was moved, the device retrieves it from the cloud while shifting other apps to make room, keeping the phone running smoothly without manual management.

In addition to its cloud features, the Robin boasts competitive hardware. It sports a 5.2-inch FullHD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 2680mAh battery with USB Type-C charging. Other specifications include a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front camera, a fingerprint sensor, dual front speakers, and connectivity options such as LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS. Notably, the device does not include a microSD card slot.

The Nextbit Robin is currently available for purchase through a Kickstarter campaign, which aims to raise $500,000. The first 1,000 backers can secure the phone at an early-bird price of $299, after which the price increases to $349. Shipping is expected to begin in January 2016.
