Nikon Unveils Compact Full-Frame ZR Camera
Nikon has just announced the ZR, its smallest full-frame camera yet in the Z CINEMA series, designed specifically for independent filmmakers. This compact device integrates RED’s color science and technology, offering a blend of professional features in a portable body.
Design and Display
Despite its small size, the ZR features a surprisingly large 4-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 3070k dots and full DCI-P3 color coverage, giving it the appearance of a larger camera. Weighing approximately 540 grams, it remains comfortable for handheld use over extended periods. Its short 16 mm flange focal distance allows for compatibility with lenses from various brands, though some adapters may limit certain functionalities.
Performance and Workflow
Powered by Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, borrowed from the high-end Z9 model, the ZR employs AI-based subject tracking capable of detecting people, animals, and even small faces. Nikon asserts that the camera’s heat management is exceptional due to its fanless design, enabling continuous recording for up to 125 minutes without overheating. The camera includes built-in LUT monitoring and Frame.io cloud transfer capabilities, streamlining post-production workflows by allowing direct file transfers to post-production teams.
Camera and Audio Capabilities
The ZR utilizes a full-frame sensor paired with a new R3D NE format, a RED-developed RAW codec customized for Nikon. It offers two base ISO settings of 800 and 6400, along with over 15 stops of dynamic range. The camera supports internal recording up to 6K at 59.94 frames per second and includes a “Cinematic video” mode preset to achieve the signature RED look. In terms of audio, it is the world’s first camera to support 32-bit float recording from both built-in and external microphones. Nokia’s OZO technology enables five different pickup patterns: front, super directional, all directions, rear, and binaural stereo.
Additional Features
The ZR includes a digital accessory shoe for powering microphones and tally lights directly. Its body is dust- and drip-resistant, and the shutter angle is adjustable. Users can also apply starscape presets previously available only on the Z6III.
