Samsung Announces Official Return of Galaxy Note 7 with Eco-Friendly Recycling Plan

Samsung has officially announced its intention to bring back the Galaxy Note 7, marking a surprising revival for the smartphone that was once withdrawn due to serious battery safety issues. Originally launched as a flagship device boasting top-tier specifications, the Note 7 faced widespread recalls and eventual discontinuation after multiple fire incidents linked to battery defects. The fallout cost Samsung over three billion dollars and damaged its reputation in the global smartphone market.

To manage the remaining inventory of approximately 2.5 million units and address environmental concerns, Samsung has outlined three core principles for handling the relaunch. The company will prioritize salvaging usable components such as cameras and semiconductors, extract valuable metals like copper, nickel, gold, and silver through eco-friendly methods, and repurpose devices as refurbished or rental phones where feasible. Given that original production has ceased, the relaunched models are expected to be refurbished units, potentially featuring a reduced battery capacity and other modifications to enhance safety.

The original Galaxy Note 7 offered a Super AMOLED 5.7-inch display with a Quad HD resolution, 64GB of internal storage expandable via microSD up to 256GB, 4GB of RAM, and a powerful 12MP rear camera. It was powered by either an Exynos 8890 octa-core processor or a custom octa-core CPU, paired with a non-removable 3500mAh battery. Despite its impressive specs, including IP68 water and dust resistance and Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the device’s safety issues led to its abrupt withdrawal.

Samsung’s decision to revisit the Note 7 appears driven by both financial recovery efforts and potential regulatory obligations related to the disposal of unsold units. The company will likely provide further updates as additional details emerge.
