Vivo Smartphone With In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Revealed

After a period of incremental upgrades in smartphones, a fresh leak hints at a potentially game-changing feature: an on-screen fingerprint sensor. For years, rumors have pointed to this technology appearing in flagship devices, with early expectations placing it on the Samsung Galaxy S8. Technical hurdles forced Samsung to delay the feature, initially planning it for the Note 8 instead. However, before any major brand unveils the technology, Chinese social media has shared footage of a Vivo smartphone showcasing an embedded fingerprint sensor.

Though Vivo may not be a household name in some markets, the brand has a history of pioneering notable innovations, including the slimmest phone ever made, the Vivo X5 Max, and the first device to offer 6GB of RAM, the Vivo Xplay 5. If this leak holds true, Vivo could become the first manufacturer to launch a phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The leaked video suggests that the technology is still maturing. Unlocking the device takes more than two seconds, a noticeable lag compared to the near-instant responses users have come to expect from conventional fingerprint sensors. Until manufacturers achieve comparable speeds, widespread adoption may be delayed.

The same underlying technology is expected to appear in high-profile upcoming releases, including Apple’s anticipated 10th-anniversary iPhone, rumored to feature an on-screen Touch ID system. Additionally, reports claim that Huawei’s P11 and certain Xiaomi models may also integrate the feature. As with any new innovation, durability remains a key concern—particularly how the sensor will perform if the display sustain cracks or damage. Only time will tell how these challenges are resolved and when the market sees a fully refined implementation.
