Vivo Y17 Review: Triple Cameras and Massive Battery on a Budget

The Vivo Y17 enters the competitive budget smartphone market with a focus on endurance and photography, yet falls short in critical areas that matter to most users. While it boasts a sizable 5000 mAh battery and a triple-camera setup, its performance and display quality cannot match what rivals offer at similar price points.

Design-wise, the Y17 sports a dark bluish finish with a textured look and a distinctive golden camera frame that gives it a premium appearance. However, the plastic construction and bulky feel due to the large battery make it less appealing in hand. The device retains the outdated Micro-USB port, which feels unacceptable in 2019.

The 6.35-inch IPS LCD panel has an HD+ resolution, resulting in a low 268 PPI density that appears dated next to FullHD+ screens on competing devices. While colors are decent, the lack of sharpness is evident, especially when watching videos.

On the performance front, the MediaTek Helio P35 chipset paired with 4 GB of RAM feels underpowered. Benchmark scores hover around 88,000 on Antutu, comparable to two-year-old processors. Gaming performance is inconsistent; PubG Mobile requires low settings and stutters, Asphalt 9 runs smoothly only in less demanding scenarios, and Dream League Soccer becomes unplayable.

The camera department sees a 13 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2 MP depth sensor. Daytime photos display natural tones with decent saturation, but the wide-angle lens introduces excessive warmth and poor detail. Night photography suffers from noise and blur, particularly with handheld shots. Selfies from the 20 MP front camera are adequate but fall short of Vivo's usual standards, with inconsistent skin tone reproduction and edge blurring in portrait mode.

Battery life is the Y17's strongest suit, delivering nearly two days of use on a single charge for moderate users. The included charger achieves 60 percent in about an hour, a testament to Vivo's fast-charging capabilities. Despite this, software limitations persist; the FunTouch 9 interface feels cluttered to users accustomed to stock Android, and memory management occasionally fails to clear recently used apps properly.

Priced at NPR 23,990 after discounts, the Vivo Y17 struggles to justify its cost. While the battery and camera features are attractive, the average performance, modest display, and outdated port make it difficult to recommend over more balanced offerings from Xiaomi, Samsung, and Realme in the same bracket.
