Xiaomi Unveils Mi 5C Featuring Custom Surge S1 Processor

Xiaomi has introduced the Mi 5C, a new addition to its flagship lineup, during a dedicated event in Beijing, separate from the Mobile World Congress proceedings. This device represents a more budget-friendly iteration of the Mi 5 series, utilizing Xiaomi's proprietary Surge S1 processor developed in collaboration with Pinecone. As the second Chinese smartphone manufacturer after Huawei to adopt an in-house chipset, Xiaomi positions the Mi 5C as a compelling mid-range option.

The Mi 5C sports a 5.15-inch Full HD display with a brightness level of 515 nits. Powering the device is the Surge S1 octa-core system-on-chip, featuring four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four additional cores at 1.4GHz, comparable in performance to the Snapdragon 625 and MediaTek Helio P20 processors. The phone includes 3GB of RAM and a non-expandable 64GB storage option.

Photography capabilities include a 12MP primary rear camera with phase detection autofocus and an 8MP front-facing camera. A 2860mAh battery supports fast charging functionality. The device runs MIUI 8 based on Android 7.0 Nougat and incorporates features such as a fingerprint sensor and USB Type-C connectivity.

Priced at $220, the Mi 5C launches at roughly half the cost of the original Mi 5, making it a potentially strong contender in the competitive mid-range smartphone market. Sales will commence in Beijing starting March 3.
